Romania has taken a strategic step by acquiring the International Port of Giurgiulești, the Republic of Moldova’s only port with direct access to the Danube River and the Black Sea, in a move aimed at reinforcing its regional influence and logistical capabilities.

The Government of Romania welcomed the transaction under which the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) transferred the port operator to Compania Națională Administrația Porturilor Maritime SA Constanța, the company that manages the Port of Constanța.

Through this acquisition, Romania has committed to the long-term development of the Giurgiulești International Free Port and to strengthening its strategic presence in the Black Sea and Danube region.

Officials said the investment is expected to enhance transport connectivity and trade flows along key European corridors, while further consolidating the Port of Constanța’s position as a major regional hub linking the European Union with neighboring regions.

The move comes amid growing efforts to expand infrastructure capacity in the wider region, particularly in light of Ukraine’s reconstruction needs and shifting trade routes. Authorities emphasized that closer integration between Giurgiulești and Constanța would contribute to regional stability, economic growth, and improved access to international markets.
