A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul at 12:49 (09:49 GMT).
Turkiye’s AFAD disaster agency said it was one of the strongest quakes to strike the city, population 16 million, in recent years.
The epicentre of the quake was in the area of Silivri, some 80km (50 miles) to the west of Istanbul. It was at a depth of 6.92km (4.3 miles), AFAD said.
There have been no reports of damage so far, but many residents evacuated buildings as they shook in the quake’s aftermath.
