Rabat, Clear Skies Magazine: Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, held high-level talks in Washington with Andrew Giuliani, focusing on football diplomacy and coordination ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The meeting underscored the growing role of sport as a platform for international engagement, as the United States prepares to co-host the tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 2026 edition is set to be the largest FIFA World Cup in history, with unprecedented global participation and logistical scale.

Giuliani, who oversees the White House FIFA Task Force responsible for coordination across federal agencies on logistics, security, and fan mobility across multiple host cities, highlighted Morocco’s expanding role in global football. He noted the country’s rapid progress in sports infrastructure and its alignment of football development with long-term national strategies, a model widely acknowledged within FIFA circles.

The discussions also reflected broader bilateral ties between Morocco and the United States, with Washington viewing Morocco as a historic partner with deep-rooted diplomatic relations. Officials recalled Morocco’s early recognition of American independence, a legacy that continues to shape contemporary cooperation across multiple sectors.

US officials indicated readiness to enhance coordination with Moroccan counterparts on organizational and operational aspects of major sporting events, viewing the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups as interconnected milestones requiring sustained international dialogue.

Simon Bland also participated in the meeting, emphasizing the importance of developing practical cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, particularly in sharing expertise related to large-scale event management.

American officials further highlighted strong global demand for the 2026 World Cup, citing millions of tickets already sold and hundreds of millions of applications received during early phases of sales—an indicator of the tournament’s unprecedented global appeal and commercial impact.

Ambassador Amrani described the World Cup as extending beyond sport, characterizing it as a reflection of the depth and vitality of Morocco-US relations. He emphasized that the tournament represents a symbolic bridge between the two nations at a time when they approach the 250th anniversary of bilateral ties.

He also noted Morocco’s upcoming role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, stating that ongoing coordination with US authorities on security and organizational matters demonstrates a high level of trust and institutional cooperation.

As preparations for 2026 continue, the Washington meeting reflects the increasing use of football as a diplomatic channel, reinforcing Morocco and the United States’ broader partnership across sport, security, and international collaboration.
